To fulfill our mission to raise the quality and expand the reach of uplifting and faith promoting music within the LDS community, the FCMA holds annual workshops in conjunction with the Media Music Division of Brigham Young University's School of Music and Tantara Records. Tantara general manager Ron Simpson, who is also the FCMA Director of Education, spearheads the events with help from the Media Music staff and the FCMA Board of Directors.
The workshop culminates Media Music Week - a week of educational activities, masterclasses, performances and networking opportunities for new artists and writers. It begins with a keynote address given by a member of the industry who can speak to current issues through the lens of faithful Church membership and a lifestyle of discipleship. Past keynote speakers include artist/producer Clive Romney (Enoch Train), studio owner/engineer Barry Gibbons (Platinum Sound), Steven Kapp Perry (artist/writer/producer, Prime Recordings), and independent producer/recording artist Greg Hansen
In recent years, the workshop has featured a presentation & mini concert by a recording artist who can offer an artist's perspective on the industry. Past presenters include Cherie Call, Sam Payne, Julie de Azevedo, duo Todd McCabe & April Moriarty Lowry, and developing artist Benton Paul with label rep Russ Dixon (Benton hit Dixon's radar at a Refiner's Fire the previous year and was offered a record deal after his open mic performance).
Addition sessions cover topics of interest to both seasoned and newer members of the industry, ranging from the dynamics of collaboration on a film score to legal ethics and choral music publishing.
Writers jump into the hot seat during the "Refiner's Fire" where attendee's songs are critiqued by a panel of pro writers and industry professionals. Pearl Award-winning recording artist Mindy Gledhill was "discovered" at a Refiner's Fire by her future producer, Kenneth Cope, who at the time was serving on the FCMA Board of Directors.
A highlight of the workshops is the optional lunch-hour "Munch & Mingle" with the FCMA Board and presenters, where participants have the chance to ask questions, network and enjoy conversation with industry leaders in a casual setting.
The FCMA Music Workshop is generally held on the first or second Saturday in December in the Maeser Auditorium on the Brigham Young University campus. Registration is free to FCMA members and full time students and is open to the public for a small fee.
